New Agricultural Bill

One of the draft Bills announced in the Queen’s speech is an Agriculture Bill, which will be accompanied by legislation to “ensure that the United Kingdom makes a success of Brexit, establishing new national policies on agriculture.”

The purpose of the Bill is to ensure that the UK has effective systems in place to protect the natural environment and to support UK farmers as the UK leaves the EU (which includes leaving the Common Agricultural Policy).

In particular it focuses on providing stability for farmers as the UK leaves the EU and ensuring that farmers are supported to compete on both the domestic and global market, thus allowing the UK to grow, sell and export more British food.

The government believes the Bill will bring the following benefits: supporting the farming sector to be more productive, competitive and profitable; ensuring stability for UK farmers as the country leaves the EU; and protecting the natural environment.
